I heard a chirping noise this afternoon and went to investigate. I was expecting birds but I found baby squirrels instead. The mother was taking her babies elsewhere. When I went to go see them there were three on the ground. I guess she had two more in her 'nest'. I protected the three on the ground ( without touching them... you're not supposed to ) from the cold while the mother came and slowly got them.
I had never been that close to a squirrel and I had only seen pictures and videos of baby ones online. I had to resist the urge to touch them. I wanted so badly to scoop them up and keep them warm but I knew there was a possibility that she'd abandon them.
The mother had a little bit of trouble finding them so I went closer and she followed. She didn't attack me or make any threatening gestures or sounds.
After her babies were all gone she came back frantic like there was one more. Together we looked around the tree where she had previously made her home and we didn't find any more. She eventually went back to her babies.
I honestly believe that she knew I was trying to help. She came right up to me many times. She was so close I could have reached out and touched her. The closest I got to her babies was under a foot to shield them from the cold and to get pictures.
It was magical.
Blurred the edges in Photoshop ( normally I frown upon this ) and added a bit of a warm tone to it.
It's proved that you actually can pick up a wild animals child, the mother won't abouned it just because it smells a little human. It's more likely that the mother abound the child if she feels danger and to stressed up because of the humans, but usually the mother dose anything to protect it's child, even if it's already dead... But no one should of course do that so it was right of you to ot I wish I could have seen the babies! Lucky you!
